I grew up in Durham where I went to school to study for my GCSEs and then A-levels. Then I moved to Edinburgh to go to university. After I graduated, I trained to be a secondary school Physics teacher which I did for 5 years before starting my new job as a research physicist. My mum taught me to knit, sew and crochet when I was little and I have always loved to do these crafts in my free time. I also love running and walking outside in nature with my partner.

My Work:
I’m a research physicist which means I use Physics to figure things out and design new tools.
My company uses special radiation which passes through stuff to look inside things we normally can’t see into like underwater pipes.
Luckily, even though I work with radiation, I haven’t turned into the Hulk… yet… -

My job is to work with an underwater CT scanner. This tool uses radiation to create images of the inside of pipes. I work in the product development department of Tracerco which means my goal is to make improvements to our current tool.

I went to school in Cherster-le-Street and Framwellgate Moor (both in County Durham).

Qualifications:
I have GCSE’s in Maths, English, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Spanish, Drama, Graphics, Manufacturing and a BTEC Fine Art.
I have A-levels in Physics, Maths, Further Maths and Chemistry.
I have a masters degree in Mathematical Physics.

I worked as a secondary school Physics teacher for 5 years before moving into Physics research in August 2023.

What did you want to be after you left school?
A rocket scientist for NASA.
If you weren't doing this job, what would you choose instead?
If I wasn't a physicist I would open a knitting shop!
Who is your favourite singer or band?
You can never go wrong with The Beatles.
What's your favourite food?
Christmas dinner but I'm vegetarian so I have a lentil loaf instead of Turkey!
