I grew up in a place called Darlington and lived with my mam, my two sisters and my brother – I’m the oldest of four children, although we’re all adults with our own children now.
I’ve always had lots of hobbies and like to try new things. When I was in my 20s I read a book about hill walking and decided I’d like to give it a try. Me and my friend climbed a big hill called Helvellyn and I loved it. Since then I’ve climbed more than 300 hills! My 6 year old has climbed eight and my 1 year old even climbed his fist one last summer.
I’m learning to play the mandolin (which is like a little guitar) and I quite like Pokémon too! My favourite sport to watch is snooker, which some people find a bit boring, but I think it’s great!

In my job I go to all sorts of places including people’s houses, big estates in the countryside, factories, parks and sports clubs. When I’m there I look at all of their trees and take lots of measurements and pictures to find out more about them. This includes finding out what species they are, how old they might be, whether there’s anything wrong with them, and what their owners might need to do to keep them healthy.
I don’t cut trees down in my job, I try and make sure they’re protected and aren’t going to cause any damage to things around them.
When I’m done I write a big report to give to the people who’ve asked for my help.

Education:
I went to school in Darlington. My primary school was called North Road and my secondary school was called Longfield. I loved science and maths at school, and I also really enjoyed learning French. I thought I wasn’t great at English but as I’ve gotten older I find that I enjoy writing a lot.
After school I went to a college called Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form. I found this quite tough and didn’t do as well as expected, but I still did enough to go to University.
Once college was done with I went to the University of Teesside and did a degree in Crime Scene Science which was very interesting. After that I did another University course to learn how to be a teacher.
-
Qualifications:
When I finished secondary school I had 10 GCSE qualifications. My best was an A in French and my worst was a C in Business Studies. I run a business now so I’ve learned quite a bit since then.
At college I got three A Levels, in Chemistry, Physics and Law. My grades weren’t as good as I’d hoped here.
I did much better at University and got a good Batchelor’s degree in Crime Scene Science. I also got something called a PGCE which is a qualification for people who want to be teachers.
A long time later I did a Level 4 qualification in Arboriculture (a fancy word for tree science).

Work History:
I’ve had loads of jobs before my current one!
After university I worked as a secondary school science teacher.
My next job was at a natural history museum called the Great North Museum: Hancock. I worked there for 7 years helping school pupils learn loads about animals, plants, fossils and habitats.
After that I went to be the boss of a small history museum called Bailiffgate. That was really fun because there were loads of people who volunteered there and they were fascinating to talk to.
I then went to work at an art house cinema helping young people learn about film making. They made some incredible short films and animations, and some of them even went on to be professional film makers!
Before I was a tree surveyor I worked at Newcastle University. My job title was Outreach Manager and along with a team of very talented teachers we travelled all over the UK teaching school pupils about the amazing science you can learn about at University, and how it can change our lives for the better.
-
Current Job:
My current job is a Tree Surveyor. It also has a fancy name – Arboriculturist.
I work in all sorts of interesting places measuring and inspecting trees to make sure they’re safe and healthy and won’t hurt anyone. One important part of my job is also to make sure trees are protected and stop people cutting them down or damaging them when they’re building new houses.
-
Employer:
I work for myself, which means I am my own boss! I work with other surveyors and companies sometimes, but I am free to choose where I work and what jobs I do.
