I am in my final year of lab research and will soon be writing my thesis (think super long essay) about everything I have researched over the last three years. I am trying to create a coating for cars which means that they can clean themselves and be less easy to scratch.

Education:
I went to St Thomas More RC Catholic School in Blaydon upon Tyne. I attended with my twin sister and I sat my GCSE’s and A-Levels here from 2010-2017.
For GCSE I chose History, Health & Social Care, Dual award Science (i got rejected for triple) and RE!
At A-Level I started with History, Chemistry, Philosophy and Ethics and English Literature. By the end of year 12, I swapped for Applied Sciences, Philosophy and Ethics and English Literature (With an EPQ where I chose a chemistry subject.).
I changed my initial choices as i really struggled with my workload at 4 A-Levels and my anxiety as a result of being the only person in my class who did dual award sciences rather than triple science! So I changed to the more mixed Applied Sciences A-Level. This led me onto my foundation degree at Northumbria, where I have stayed for 7 years and without these choices I wouldn’t be doing my PhD now.
There’s always a route to do what you want, it just doesn’t have to be the same as everyone else!

Work History:
I always worked part time during my degree either in pubs or in retail. I took as many chances as were available to me during my degree to do subject related internships (paid or unpaid) as this would give me more experience for getting a job.
My retail job, I still get asked to return now nearly 10 years after I started. This looks great on a CV for your commitment to something longer term. But always do something you enjoy.
This gave me a big advantage when applying for my PhD as this is the same process as applying for a job.
