Originally from West Yorkshire I moved to Newcastle when I was 18 and never went back! I now live with my wife and three daughters in the countryside just outside of Newcastle. This enables me to pursue my main hobbies; running, cycling, mountain biking and walking. I’m currently training for my second marathon.

My Work:
I am currently a Software Developer and Technical Team Leader at Airbus Defence & Space based in Newcastle where I work with a small team to make computer programs that represent the real world on maps. These are called GIS Applications.

GIS (Geographic Information Systems) are any computer programs which use maps to show the real world. We use these systems to help the Police, Fire Services, Government and also to monitor Climate Change and Environmental Management.

Education:
I went to high school in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire and then college in Huddersfield where I studied Mathematics, Physics and Computing. These subjects sparked my interest problem solving and how we can use computers to make life easier for us all.
At 18, I moved to Newcastle to study Computer Science for Industry at Northumbria University. As part of my degree I did a placement year at a company which would ultimately become Airbus Defence & Space which means I’ve only ever had one job!

Qualifications:
9 GCSEs, 3 A-Levels (Mathematics, Physics and Computing), 1 Bachelor’s Degree (Computer Science for Industry)

Work History:
At university I had several temporary jobs. I worked one summer for Sarsons in a factory bottling vinegar, for Nestle working with their computer systems and also I went to Berlin for three months to work for a small company where I translated their German computer programs into English.
I have only ever had one full-time job….however that job has been at different companies which were bought or combined to eventually become part of Airbus Defence & Space. All these companies worked with maps and satellite imagery.

I just wanted to work with computers - luckily that's exactly what I do!
