I’m from Manchester originally, and moved to Leeds for university in 2018. I’ve lived in West Yorkshire ever since, but I am doing a PhD course in Northumbria University! I’ve been interested in the environmental πΏ and natureπ± since I was in secondary school, and I love to share my passion with anyone I meet.
I like going to hikes and campingποΈ with my partner, but during the winter time, my favourite thing to do is sit in front of the fireβ€οΈβπ₯ and watch TV πΊ with my family.

I am doing a PhD, which is a 3.5-year research course. I study how to help plants and animals survive climate change. My work takes me to beautiful places in the UK, mostly in upland habitats (in the hills and mountains), where I check how many different plants grow in an area. I want to find out if some habitats are better at helping plants and animals stay cool as the climate gets hotter. For example, forests with lots of trees can block sunlight from hitting the ground, which keeps it cooler for wildlife. This cooling will be very important as the world gets warmer.

Education:
I went to secondary school in Manchester – St. Matthews High School
My college was also in Manchester – Loretto Sixth Form
I went to the University of Leeds for my undergraduate degree and my Masters degree, and now I am studying at Northumbria University in Newcastle!
-
Qualifications:
I think – it was a while ago – that I got about 10 GCSEs and BTEC in performing arts, then I did English Literature, Biology and Psychology at A Level. At University, I got a Bachelors of Science (BSc) in Biology and a Masters of Science (MSc) in Biodiversity and Conservation.

Work History:
I started working when I was only 8 years old! I was an actor on stage, and on a couple of TV shows. Then when I turned 16, I worked as a party host in a children’s play centre (the kind with big slides and ball pits).
After that, I worked in a clothes shop called Topshop for around 2 years (which doesn’t really exist anymore). Then when I was about 19 I worked in customer service for a care home company, and did that throughout my degrees (for about 6 years). Then I was a nanny for three young girls for a few months, getting them ready and taking them to and from school.
Then I worked for the Woodland Trust, a charity that helps protect UK woodlands. But that job was really hard, and I was doing my masterβs degree at the same time. So, I decided to take a simpler job cleaning houses. I liked it because I donβt mind cleaning, and I could listen to music and podcasts while I worked.
Now, I get paid to study, which is the best!
-
Current Job:
I currently get paid to study and research ways we can manage the environment for wildlife. As a PhD student, I get to study plants and wildlife in the context of climate change. I spend my time researching, reading scientific articles, and writing up my findings. I also do fieldwork, where I survey plants in different habitats to learn how they are affected by climate change. Itβs exciting because I get to explore beautiful areas and help understand how we can protect nature for the future.
-
Employer:
I am funded by UKRI, which stands for UK Research and Innovation. UKRI is a government organisation that supports research in many areas, like science, engineering, social sciences, and the arts, to improve the economy, society, and quality of life.
One part of UKRI is NERC (Natural Environment Research Council), which focuses on research to help protect the natural environment, especially with issues like climate change.
My host university is Northumbria University. They provide the main support for my PhD, including academic guidance and research resources while I work on my project.
