I love going to live music, and I also play a lot of squash. Or if I want a quiet night in, there’s nothing better than a hot drink and a good book!

My Work:
I do research into mental health – in particular into psychosis, which is when people have unusual experiences that other people don’t – for example, hearing or seeing things that other people don’t (also known as hallucinations). I’m interested in why some people have these experiences but others don’t, and how we can help people who have them. I also lecture about mental health at Northumbria University.

One of the things I’m interested in is what is going on in the mind and the brain when people have unusual experiences – for example, when someone has a hallucination of a voice. It could be that someone struggles with controlling their own thoughts (which we all do sometimes!) which leads to experiencing that as coming from someone else. But we don’t really know – we need to do lots of research to try to work it out!

Education:
I went to school ‘down south’ in a small city called Winchester. I moved ‘up north’ to go to university in Durham, and I’ve live here ever since.
-
Qualifications:
GCSEs, then A Levels, then an undergraduate degree, then a Masters degree, then a PhD
-
Work History:
All sorts! I had a paper round when I was a teenager, then I worked in Sainsbury’s stacking shelves while I did my A Levels. I worked in a nightclub for some additional cash while I was at university.
Once I’d finished at university I worked as a ‘postdoc’ – which is usually the first career level of being a scientist – where I spent a lot of time working with mental health patients – interviewing them about their experiences, conducting psychological testing, and using an MRI scanner to look at brains!
